After the business of the official meeting we enjoyed sandwiches and Rowan showed us a quilt which she is hand quilting and one she had finished. Hand quilting can be sewn using a frame or on a table. There are many steps for preparing the layers so that they are even, the design is drawn on with pencil. There is no set rule for where to start, but if you start in the middle and work outwards it makes sense. Cotton thread is used and it is started with a knot which is pulled through between the layers. In the past women would meet and all work on the quilt together.
We also had a photo shoot of the iron carriers which were made at our daytime sew-in on 5th January.
Our next meeting is a sew-in at 9.30 am on Tuesday 16th February in the Pennine Room, Riverside, bring any crafty project you are working on, or just come in for a chat. Non-members £3 including refreshments.
Our next evening meeting is at 7pm on Tuesday, 1st March where we will be looking at 'Lines in Embroidery', using stitches and threads creatively. Please bring your usual sewing tools, a variety of threads, fabric to work on, a stitch book and a small embroidery hoop/frame. Non-members £6 which includes free entry into the raffle and refreshments.
Please contact us if you would like to attend as the venue is yet to be decided.
