June Workshop and exhibition update

Leather Workshop Masterclass with Mark Rowney

What an amazing workshop, and such a lovely day.

Mark is such a great artist and brought these pieces of his work to inspire us. Its amazing to see what you can do with leather.

The tools we needed were a hard surface, a wooden mallet and the metal tools.  Mark had been collecting these for years and we had a wide selection to choose from.  Later on we needed rubber gloves and cotton rags.

The leather was dampened with water and then we hammered shapes into the leather.  Different results could be realised from a single tool by adjusting the strength of the hammer blow. We then started to work on projects of our own.

Finally we stained our work and buffed up to give a nice sheen.

By the end of a very productive day we had produced enough for a small market stall.

Leather tiles, a strap, key rings, butterflies and pouches

Exhibition Update
Our monthly meeting for June was an informal get together where we shared our ideas and projects for our big exhibition next year.  All I can say is wow, such a lot of hard work has been done already and some exciting ideas too.  But all hush, hush, so no photos yet.

Appleby Banner

Our March meeting was a talk by Stan Rooke on the history of Appleby Moot Hall, which goes back to the16th Century.  We sat in the Council Chambers, on the walls were portraits and photographs of all the previous mayors.

In 2008-9 members of Appleby Embroiderers' Guild used their talents to make a banner for the town. Many members of the Guild are now part of Appleby Textile Group.

And here are a few in closer detail.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 4th April, 7pm in the Guide Hut.  Our speaker is Marna Lunt, a very creative textile landscape artist.  Visitors are welcome, entry fee £5, which includes refreshments and entry into the raffle.

AGM 2017 with Spinning and Weaving

An exciting new programme of meetings, workshops, trips and events was presented at our AGM held last week.  For details please see the page links on left hand side of this post.

After the official proceedings we welcomed Ros Milner who gave an amusing talk on her life in spinning and weaving.  She told us how she was gripped by the spinning bug and brought in samples of her wool, knitted items and tools used in the process of turning fleece into yarn and fabric.
